A Different Kind of Musical - reports OUT magazine...

The new Sting production, The Last Ship, is a reflection on the singer's past and a study of working-class woes. There's nothing campier than the collapse of a British industrial town. Or at least that's what a handful of recent Broadway shows would have us believe. In the past decade, we’ve seen musicals about unemployed blokes who are saved from despair by drag queens (Kinky Boots) and male stripping (The Full Monty), and even Billy Elliot took a break from the hero's tender ballet dreams to stage a zany puppet show about Margaret Thatcher. It all makes losing your job seem kind of fabulous. But Sting might disagree. This fall the singer pays tribute to his own working-class roots with The Last Ship, a Broadway production inspired by the demise of the shipbuilding trade in his hometown of Wallsend near Newcastle. Though it's filled with feeling (and plenty of comic relief), the show won'’t be shooting glitter - literally or metaphorically - over its audience...

Sting Brings "The Last Ship" Home to the North East of England...

To benefit the Sage Gateshead 10th Birthday Appeal, Sting will perform songs from "The Last Ship," his latest album and new Broadway musical of the same name, on 24th and 25th April 2015. These will be the only UK performances of their kind and are both kindly supported by Cunard. Additional support comes from Shepherd Offshore and Port of Tyne. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Monday 1st September from 10am at www.sagegateshead.com, and also at Sage Gateshead's box office on 0191 443 4661. Sting.com fan club members will have an opportunity to purchase tickets in advance of the general public beginning tomorrow, 28th August at 10am (local time)...

The box office for new musical The Last Ship will open on Monday, August 25 at 10AM/EST at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52 Street), in conjunction with a special one-time-only 24-hour flash sale from midnight August 25 to midnight August 26. Sting's Last Ship musical is ready to leave harbour...

A musical inspired by Sting's early years on Tyneside has been given a Broadway opening date. The Royal Navy's new toy, HMS Queen Elizabeth, will not join the fleet until 2020 but a significant theatrical vessel has just left port and has a berth on Broadway in the autumn. Sting's musical, The Last Ship, is nearing the end of an encouraging run at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago. This is the try-out, the equivalent of the sea trials. Far better to get a show watertight than launch it on Broadway's rough seas where a shark-like critic can send it to the bottom, Titanic-style. That has been the costly fate of many a new musical, in Britain and the States. And while Chicago is hardly 'the sticks', it is some way from the New York street where theatrical success shines most brightly. The Last Ship, which has been a labour of love for Sting, closes next weekend at the Bank of America Theatre...
