'‘THE LAST SHIP' - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED says the Chicago Sun-Times...

They are calling it a new Broadway musical. But that is a misnomer. Sting's "The Last Ship," which received its much-anticipated world premiere in Chicago on Wednesday night, is an old-fashioned grand opera of the most eloquent sort - awash in both turbulent emotions and intimate dramatic gestures. A true masterwork, it not only keens a ravishing dirge for a lost way of life, and the indomitable spirit of the working class as it continues to stagger through this post-industrial age. But as it spins an eternal tale of the tensions between fathers and sons (and yes, a "holy ghost" of sorts, too), as well as the ardor and disappointments of love, the opposing pull of home and "away," and the need for some form of faith along with ennobling work, it magnifies the human heartbeat, and captures a genuine sense of the yearning that keeps people going...

Interview: THE WALL STREET JOURNAL (2014)

Just before the first public performance of the musical "The Last Ship" in Chicago, the production's star composer and lyricist was hiding under a mixing console at the back of the theater. Hunkered down by the feet of the sound man, Sting kept out of sight of the ticket holders filing in. After the curtain went up and the prologue began, the singer emerged and stood in the dark aisle, quietly snapping his fingers with the music. Sitting a few feet away, a fan-club member from Italy did a double take and whispered to her friend, "Sting!" He kept his eyes on the stage...

The Pre-Broadway World Premiere of THE LAST SHIP, the new musical with music and lyrics by 16-time Grammy Award winner Sting, and book by Tony winner John Logan and Pulitzer Prize-winner Brian Yorkey, opens tonight at the Bank of America Theatre (18 W Monroe) and plays through July 13, 2014. THE LAST SHIP is directed by Tony winner Joe Mantello and has choreography by Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Steven Hoggett. THE LAST SHIP will begin previews on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 W. 52 St.) on September 29 prior to opening night on October 26, 2014. Sting vividly recalls walking out the door of his childhood home in Wallsend, a shipbuilding town on the northeastern coast of England, and being confronted by the massive form of one of the vessels whose construction was the lifeblood of an entire community from the 1860s until the shipyard was closed in 2007. "You'd watch this great hulking thing rise up over time, and then it would be set out to sea, and the whole process would start all over again," recalled the singer-songwriter who forged his career as a member of the new wave rock band, The Police, and then went on to work as a solo performer whose music has incorporated elements of rock, jazz, reggae, new-age, worldbeat and classical (from the English Renaissance composer John Dowland to Prokofiev and Kurt Weill). Broadway: Sting Musical "The Last Ship" Sails and Soars in Super Chicago Launch...

It's going to be a rockin' fall on Broadway if last night in Chicago was any indication. The previews here have begun of "The Last Ship," the gorgeously tuneful musical written by rock star Sting with a book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, choreographed by Steven Hoggett and directed by Joe Mantello. "The Last Ship" is already quite sea worthy and built for a long journey. Enough with those metaphors. Truly, once "The Last Ship" is tweaked and polished in this out of town run, the show will be a formidable masterwork when it comes to Broadway this fall for an October opening. For one thing, the songs are delicious - actual songs with brilliant melodies, hooks and lyrics that poetically (and humorously) move along the story of a dying breed of shipbuilders in Newcastle, England...
